Inspired by the great works of genius architects throughout history, photographer André Vicente Gonçalves set out to capture some of that greatness. All the photos are of windows, from all over the world, forming a collection called "Windows of the World". Gonçalves says that regardless of the era, architects have always stunned people by pushing the inherent limits to achieve great beauty. This is evident in the effective design of windows that act as a bridge between nature and the inside of the house, so they bring the vitality of nature into the building. Modesty, rusticity or splendor, luxury, the intention of the building owner will be clearly shown through the building's windows
Windows in Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, are tiled with elegant patterns and white facades. The window frames in Aveiro are brightly colored with lovely, delicate balconies. Diverse but still retain their uniqueness, the window frames are both colorful and cool in Porto. With the main color of copper gold, the simplicity but sophistication of the window frames in Evora. With a deep brown color, the window frames in Ponta Delgada make viewers feel ancient and old. The cool blue color of the window frames in Santa Susana is like a glass of cool water, helping viewers to pour out their thoughts and feel comfortable and relieved. The bright, light pink color of the window frames in Coimbra makes viewers feel like they are immersed in a fairy tale world. The elegance and sophistication of each window frame in Praia Da Vitoria. The decoration style with vintage patterns, brings a feeling of both antiquity and elegance to Ericeira. Designed in a completely different style, with the main tone of dark brown, the walls with messy bricks, creating a poetic ancient look for Piodao, Portugal. On the island of Sao Miguel, Azores, architects have used volcanic stone in their designs, helping to narrow the gap between nature and civilization. The elegant pink and white window frames in Viseu province, The simple decoration style with two main tones, simple but bold and individual in Aldeia Da Luz, Decorated with striped patterns, has created a unique feature for the window frames in Costa Nova The window frames with dark brown tones, simple design make the viewer feel lost in the old days in Monsaraz, Portugal.
The modesty, rusticity or flashiness, luxury, the intention of the building owner will be clearly shown through the building's windows. The simple, rustic windows of ordinary people will be in stark contrast to the flashy, luxurious windows with intricate designs, decorated with gold in royal palaces. Windows are the bridge that helps us listen to the laughter, love and stories of the families living behind those windows.
The windows are like a small glass compartment separating the bustling world outside from the quiet, inner world inside. Every great design of the architects brings endless inspiration to Gonçalves. From window frames to delicately curved iron fences. For Gonçalves, windows also show the beauty of cultures, and at the same time reflect the transformation of the world over time.
During his research and photography, Gonçalves discovered that not only were there differences in design between buildings, but also between cities, and these were most clearly expressed through windows. Therefore, Gonçalves categorized the window photos into different cities, to highlight the subtle differences in each window in each city. The collection, with hundreds of diverse photos of different windows around the world, allows viewers to see the subtle differences in aesthetics and culture of each city. Through this, viewers can travel around the world and find history or forgotten cultures.
